Barbara Sherrod Biography
Born in New York City, I live in Fort Collins, Colorado, with my husband, Geologist Neil Sherrod. The marriage - "arranged" by our mothers -- inspired the plot of my Regency novel Gamester's Lady.Neil and I have two daughters, Dr. Nancy B. Sherrod and Ruth Sherrod.
I hold B.A. and M.A. degrees from Barnard College and the University of Idaho respectively and am a former editor for Harcourt Brace, New York.
After touring England with the Jane Austen Society, I wanted to write books that captured some of the exuberance, social satire and subtle emotion of Pride and Prejudice. I also hoped to provide an instant escape for young mothers like myself; I called that escape "bathtub books." These are paperbacks a mother can climb into a warm bath with, having first locked the bathroom door. Reviewers have compared the style and tone of my novels to Georgette Heyer's. Creator of the Regency genre, Heyer wrote what are now considered "retro," or classic, Regencies. My Regencies have been published under the names Barbara Sherrod and Barbara Neil (for Harlequin).
My career as writer halted when I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia. Thanks to Network Chiropractic, DRX treatments, improved diet and Muscle Activation Therapy, I am scribbling once more. Recently I completed a contemporary women's novel, the story of a wife and mother who runs away from home. The published title is "Gone Missing."
In addition to Regencies, I have written articles, literary short fiction and musical parody.I perform the latter every summer with The Mostlies (www.mostlies.org), a regional comedy troupe. Awards include a Top Hand from the Colorado Authors League and prizes for literary short fiction from the University of Utah and Crazyquilt. As teacher and lecturer, I have conducted seminars for Colorado State and Baylor universities as well as Rocky Mountain Fiction Writers and Jane Austen Society conferences.
I enjoy gardening, baseball, cooking, volunteering, good conversation and collecting shopping bags. My favorite contemporary authors are Elinor Lipman, Anita Brookner, Alice Munro and Maeve Binchy.Often I go back to classics: Jane Austen, Charles Dickens, Anthony Trollope and Charlotte Bronte. My goal in life is to have conversations with wise people.
